Introducing “Liberate”: People Law’s Answer to Preventable Employment Risks

The Origin Story: Why Liberate Exists

At People Law, we have years of experience of assisting clients with employee relations disputes, investigating conduct issues and grievances, and defending clients in employment tribunals.

One pattern emerges consistently. Most legal risk doesn’t stem from the ignorance or the misapplication of employment law. It stems from managers and leaders avoiding the early, sometimes difficult, often all-too-personal, conversations.

Managers and leaders aren’t failing deliberately. Most managers are “accidental”; those who were promoted for technical skills and capabilities, but who are unfamiliar with – and untrained in – managing people.

Through Liberate Management Training, we translate our extensive frontline legal experience into practical leadership and management training – with the aim of dramatically mitigating the people-related risk faced by employers.

The problem, and the opportunity for employers°

Poor management is not a soft issue; it’s a major commercial problem. In the UK alone, the cost of poor management has been estimated at £84 billion a year in lost productivity.

One of the most powerful ways for organisations to reduce people-related risk whilst improving business results is to improve the quality of their leaders and their managers. Better-trained leaders and managers lower people-related risk whilst creating stronger teams, more consistent performance and greater levels of productivity; all of which directly impacts on the bottom line.

They do that through creating connection.

Connection°

For decades, businesses have chased employee engagement scores as the causal engine of business success, pouring resources into surveys, perks and interventions. Despite that, employee engagement, globally, continues to decline. Engagement tells us what people feel, not why. Perks, socials and values campaigns fail because they treat symptoms, not root causes.

Rather than focussing on “engagement”, Liberate is designed to equip leaders and managers with the knowledge and skills that they need to build connection in their teams and organisations. “Engagement” is desirable of course; but connection is the pathway to it.

We see connection as a flywheel. When people managers demonstrate the 4 core behaviours that we call the Liberate Management Principles (Communication, Courage, Candour and Curiosity), the flywheel builds an inevitable and unstoppable momentum.

Engagement, productivity, performance and profitability all increase.

Our Leadership Sessions°

Our approach to training Senior Leaders follows a “risk awareness to connection” framework. In each one-day session with Senior Leaders, our discussions focus on 3 core areas:

Part 1: Appreciation of risk
  • Framework-level knowledge of employment law in a day-to-day context
  • Building familiarity with terms, and confidence in consequence
  • Exploring learning in practical group exercises
  • HR’s raison d’etre: maximising the performance of people in business
  • Managers as first-line HR
  • Maximising HR’s performance
  • “Accidental” managers and leaders contributing to disconnection
  • Ineffective communication
  • Curiosity as a superpower
  • Candour v empathy & getting the balance right
  • Courage to tackle difficult issues early and head-on

Our Management Training Sessions°

Senior Leaders, once they experience the Liberate Management principles, naturally want their Management Team to live them. We support with that journey.

The programme

Our Liberate Management Training programme runs over the course of 2 consecutive days. Over the course of the programme, we run practical work-shop style sessions covering the following topics:

  • Introduction to Management
  • Appreciation of Risk
  • Connection, Culture & Engagement
  • Curiosity
  • Communication
  • Candour & Empathy
  • Courage

Managers will leave those sessions with a far deeper appreciation of what the role of a people manager actually entails, how to manage and execute the early (often difficult) conversations, and feeling inspired to set about building “connection” in their teams.
